Kontaktförbudet

Kontaktförbudet, or a contact ban, is a legal protective measure used in Sweden to prevent one person from contacting or approaching another. The purpose is to protect a person from threats, harassment, or violence, often in cases of domestic violence, stalking, or other conflicts.

The order is typically issued by a court, and in urgent situations the police can impose a provisional ban while a court decision is being sought. The ban can prohibit direct contact through phone calls, texts, letters, e-mail, and social media, and may also forbid the offender from approaching the protected person or being near their home, workplace, school, or another designated place. It can also restrict attending events where contact could occur.

Who can apply: The person at risk can apply for the measure themselves, with support from authorities or a legal representative; in many cases a prosecutor can request a ban in connection with criminal proceedings.

Duration and scope: The ban is set for a defined period by the court and can be limited in scope or broader. The order can be renewed or extended upon review.

Enforcement and consequences: Violating a kontaktförbud is a crime and may lead to penalties, including fines or imprisonment. Police have authority to arrest a person who breaches the ban and to take protective actions for the protected person.

Rights and review: The person subject to the ban has the right to legal representation and to appear in court to challenge or modify the decision; the protected person can request changes if circumstances change.
