The Konsumenträttsdirektivet, or Consumer Rights Directive, is a European Union directive that aims to harmonize and strengthen consumer protection rights across member states. It consolidates and updates previous directives related to distance contracts and off-premises contracts, creating a more coherent framework for consumer transactions made outside of traditional retail environments.

Key provisions of the directive include enhanced pre-contractual information requirements, ensuring consumers receive comprehensive details about goods or services before making a purchase. It also establishes a standardized 14-day withdrawal period for consumers to cancel distance and off-premises contracts without providing a reason. This period generally begins from the day the consumer receives the goods or concludes the service contract.

Furthermore, the directive clarifies rules regarding the reimbursement of consumers and the return of goods. It also addresses the issue of digital content, providing specific rules for contracts related to the supply of digital content that is not supplied on a tangible medium. The aim is to create a level playing field for businesses operating across the EU and to empower consumers with clear and consistent rights, thereby fostering trust in the internal market.
