The trustee is responsible for taking control of all assets belonging to the bankrupt, which may include real estate, vehicles, equipment, intellectual property, and financial holdings. They will also investigate the bankrupt's financial affairs to identify any potential fraudulent activities or preferential payments that could be clawed back for the benefit of the estate. Creditors are required to submit claims to the trustee within a specified period.

Once the assets are liquidated, the trustee will distribute the funds to the creditors. The order of distribution is typically determined by law, with secured creditors usually having priority over unsecured creditors. Any remaining assets after all debts have been settled are returned to the bankrupt individual or entity. If there are insufficient assets to cover all debts, the bankrupt is typically discharged from their remaining obligations, although there can be exceptions depending on the jurisdiction and the nature of the bankruptcy. The process aims to provide an orderly resolution for creditors and a fresh start for the bankrupt where appropriate.
