Konjugaatit is a Finnish term that translates to "conjugates" in English. In chemistry, conjugation refers to a system of alternating single and double bonds in a molecule. This arrangement of pi electrons allows them to delocalize over several atoms, which significantly influences the molecule's properties.

Conjugated systems are often found in organic molecules and are responsible for their color, reactivity, and stability. For example, the delocalization of electrons in conjugated pi systems is what allows many organic dyes to absorb visible light and appear colored. The extent of conjugation directly correlates with the wavelength of light absorbed; longer conjugated systems absorb light at longer wavelengths, leading to deeper colors.

The extended pi electron system in conjugated molecules also affects their chemical behavior. They are often more reactive than similar molecules with isolated double bonds, participating in various addition reactions, particularly those involving electrophiles.
