Konjugaatiojärjestelmä, often referred to as the conjugation system, is a fundamental concept in linguistics, particularly in the study of grammar and morphology. It describes the systematic variation of words, typically verbs, to indicate grammatical information such as tense, mood, voice, aspect, and person. This inflectional process allows a single root word to take on different forms, each carrying specific grammatical meaning and function within a sentence.

Different languages employ distinct conjugation systems. For example, in many Indo-European languages like English, Spanish, or German, verbs are conjugated to show changes in tense (past, present, future) and person (I, you, he/she/it, we, they). Finnish, on the other hand, has a more complex system where verbs can also inflect for mood (indicative, imperative, conditional, potential), voice (active, passive), and even for the presence of a negative auxiliary verb.

The regularity or irregularity of a conjugation system is a key characteristic. Regular conjugations follow predictable patterns, making them easier to learn and apply. Irregular conjugations, however, deviate from these patterns and often stem from historical sound changes or linguistic evolution.
