Komplexálódás, also known as complexation or chelation, is a chemical process where a central metal ion bonds with a ligand. A ligand is a molecule or ion that can donate at least one electron pair to the central metal ion, forming a coordination complex. This bond is typically coordinate covalent, meaning one atom provides both electrons for the shared pair. The ligand effectively surrounds the metal ion, forming a stable structure.

The strength of the bond between the metal ion and the ligand depends on several factors, including the nature of the metal ion, the ligand, and the surrounding chemical environment. Ligands that can bind to a metal ion at multiple points, known as chelating ligands, often form particularly stable complexes. This multi-point attachment, resembling a claw gripping an object, is called chelation.

Komplexálódás has numerous applications across various fields. In analytical chemistry, it is used for the quantitative determination of metal ions. In environmental science, complexation plays a role in the transport and bioavailability of metals in soil and water.
