Kommutatiivsust, known in English as commutativity, is a fundamental property in mathematics that describes the ability to swap the order of elements within a binary operation without affecting the result. Specifically, an operation * (such as addition or multiplication) is said to be commutative if, for all elements a and b in a set, the equation a * b = b * a holds true.

This concept is central to various branches of mathematics, including algebra and number theory. For example, addition of real numbers is commutative because a + b = b + a for any real numbers a and b. Similarly, multiplication of real numbers is commutative, satisfying a × b = b × a. However, not all operations are commutative; for instance, subtraction and division do not generally satisfy the property, as a - b ≠ b - a and a ÷ b ≠ b ÷ a in most cases.
