Kolmiossa

Kolmiossa is a Finnish term used to describe a three-room apartment. The word is formed from kolmio, meaning a three-room dwelling, and the inessive suffix -ssa, indicating location inside. It is commonly used in real estate listings, advertisements, and everyday speech to label the type of residence. A kolmio typically comprises three rooms used as bedrooms or living areas, a separate kitchen (or a kitchen corner in modern layouts), a bathroom, and usually a hallway and a balcony. The exact room configuration varies; one common arrangement is two bedrooms plus a living room, with a separate kitchen. Some kolmiot have open-plan kitchens integrated with the living space, while others have a distinct kitchen.

In the housing market, kolmiot are a popular choice for families and couples because they offer more living space than smaller flats like one- or two-room apartments. Sizes commonly range from roughly 50 to 90 square meters, depending on era and location. The stock is concentrated in urban and suburban areas, with many buildings from the 1960s–1980s, though newer constructions also include kolmiot.

Etymology and usage: The form kolmiossa is the inessive case used when speaking about being in or located in a three-room apartment, as in asunto on kolmiossa or hän asuu kolmiossa.
