Kolmiokytkennässä

Kolmiokytkennässä, also known as delta connection, is a method of connecting three-phase electrical components such as transformers or generators. In this configuration, the three components are connected in a closed loop, forming a triangle shape. Each component is connected between two line terminals, and the starting point of one component is connected to the ending point of the next. This results in three windings or coils being connected in series to form a closed circuit.

The primary characteristic of a delta connection is that the voltage across each phase winding is equal to the line voltage. However, the current flowing through each phase winding is less than the line current, specifically the line current is the square root of three times the phase current. This relationship is a fundamental aspect of three-phase power calculations.

Delta connections are commonly used in power distribution systems, particularly for motors and transformers. They are known for their ability to provide a stable and reliable power supply. The absence of a neutral point in a standard delta connection means that fault currents can be higher, and it does not readily provide a reference point for grounding. However, special configurations like an intentionally grounded delta can be implemented if grounding is required. The delta connection is one of the two primary methods for connecting three-phase systems, the other being the wye (or star) connection.
