Kolmikkoraskaus, also known as triplet pregnancy, refers to a pregnancy where a woman carries three fetuses simultaneously. This type of pregnancy is significantly rarer than singleton or twin pregnancies and presents unique medical considerations and risks for both the mother and the babies.

The conception of triplets can occur through two primary mechanisms: a single egg splitting into three identical embryos (identical triplets) or two or three separate eggs being fertilized by different sperm (fraternal triplets, or a combination of identical and fraternal). Identical triplets are the least common outcome.

Diagnosing a triplet pregnancy typically occurs early in gestation through ultrasound examinations. These examinations are crucial for monitoring fetal development, assessing placental sharing, and identifying potential complications.

Due to the increased number of fetuses, triplet pregnancies are considered high-risk. Common complications include preterm labor and birth, which is almost universal in triplet pregnancies, often resulting in babies with low birth weight and the need for neonatal intensive care. Maternal risks can include gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, anemia, and increased discomfort due to the significant uterine distension. The physical demands on the mother are considerably higher.

The management of a triplet pregnancy involves close medical supervision, frequent prenatal visits, and often specialized care from maternal-fetal medicine specialists. Delivery is typically planned via Cesarean section, often before the due date, to mitigate risks associated with prolonged gestation. The well-being of all three babies and the mother is the paramount concern throughout the pregnancy and during the delivery process.
