Kolmifaasijärjestelmille, or three-phase systems in English, refers to an electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution system that uses three alternating current (AC) sources. These sources are typically identical in frequency and amplitude but are offset in phase by 120 degrees relative to each other. This arrangement is the most common method of delivering electricity in modern grids, powering everything from homes to large industrial machinery.

The primary advantage of three-phase systems over single-phase systems is their ability to transmit more power with a given amount of conductor material. This is due to the inherent efficiency of distributing the power load across three conductors. Furthermore, three-phase motors are simpler, more robust, and more efficient than single-phase motors of comparable power. They also produce a constant power output, unlike single-phase systems which experience power fluctuations.

Three-phase power is generated by three separate coils wound around a common core, with their magnetic fields staggered. In distribution, the three phases can be delivered to consumers in various configurations, such as Delta or Wye (Star) connections. Wye connections are particularly common as they provide a neutral point, allowing for both three-phase loads and single-phase loads to be supplied from the same distribution network. The precise voltages and frequencies can vary depending on the region and intended application, but the fundamental principles of three-phase power remain consistent globally.
