Kolloidkémiai

Kolloidkémiai, also known as colloid chemistry, is a branch of chemistry that studies colloids. Colloids are mixtures in which one substance of microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance. The dispersing medium can be a liquid, solid, or gas. The dispersed particles have a size range typically between 1 nanometer and 1 micrometer.

The study of colloids involves understanding their preparation, properties, and behavior. Key properties include the Tyndall effect, where light is scattered by the dispersed particles, making a beam of light visible. Colloids also exhibit Brownian motion, the random movement of particles suspended in a fluid (a liquid or a gas) resulting from their collision with the fast-moving atoms or molecules in the gas or liquid. Stability of colloids is another important aspect, often related to the electrical charges on the surface of the dispersed particles, which cause them to repel each other.

Applications of colloid chemistry are widespread. They are found in everyday products such as milk, mayonnaise, paints, and fog. In industry, colloidal systems are crucial for processes like emulsion polymerization, fabrication of ceramics, and water treatment. Medical applications include drug delivery systems and diagnostic tools. Understanding colloid chemistry is essential for developing and optimizing many materials and processes.
