Kolloidiset

Kolloidiset refers to colloidal systems, which are mixtures where one substance of microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance. These particles are larger than individual atoms or molecules but too small to be seen with the naked eye. The dispersed particles in a colloid range in size from approximately 1 nanometer to 1 micrometer.

Colloidal systems are characterized by the fact that the dispersed phase does not settle out under gravity. This is a key distinction between colloids and true solutions, where the solute is dissolved at the molecular level, and suspensions, where larger particles eventually settle. Examples of colloids include milk, fog, and mayonnaise. In milk, fat globules are dispersed in water. Fog is a colloid of water droplets suspended in air. Mayonnaise is an emulsion of oil in water.

The behavior of colloidal particles is influenced by Brownian motion, the random movement of particles caused by collisions with the molecules of the surrounding medium. Colloids also exhibit the Tyndall effect, where light is scattered by the dispersed particles, making the beam of light visible. This effect is not observed in true solutions.

Colloids are classified based on the physical state of the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium. Common types include sols (solid dispersed in liquid), gels (liquid dispersed in solid), emulsions (liquid dispersed in liquid), and aerosols (solid or liquid dispersed in gas). The study of colloids, known as colloid science, is important in various fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science, with applications ranging from food production and pharmaceuticals to environmental remediation and nanotechnology.
