Common examples include sols (solid particles in a liquid medium), gels (liquid particles in a solid medium), and aerosols (liquid or solid particles in a gas medium). Some familiar examples of colloidal systems include milk (fat globules in water), fog (liquid water droplets in air), and smoke (solid carbon particles in air).

The stability of colloidal particles is crucial for their applications. This stability can be achieved through various mechanisms, such as electrostatic repulsion, steric stabilization, and depletion forces. Electrostatic repulsion occurs when the particles carry like charges, preventing them from aggregating. Steric stabilization involves the use of polymers or surfactants that adsorb onto the particle surface, creating a repulsive barrier. Depletion forces arise from the presence of non-adsorbing polymers that exclude particles from certain regions, leading to repulsion.

Colloidal particles have numerous applications in various fields, including materials science, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science. In materials science, they are used to create advanced materials with unique properties. In pharmaceuticals, colloidal drug delivery systems enhance the efficacy and stability of medications.
