Kokonaistodennäköisyyksiä, often translated as the law of total probability, is a fundamental concept in probability theory that provides a way to calculate the probability of an event by considering all possible mutually exclusive scenarios that could lead to it. It states that if a set of events B1, B2, ..., Bn forms a partition of the sample space (meaning they are mutually exclusive and their union covers the entire sample space), then the probability of any event A can be expressed as the sum of the probabilities of A occurring given each of the partition events, weighted by the probability of each partition event.

Mathematically, the law of total probability is written as P(A) = Σ P(A|Bi)P(Bi) for i from 1 to n. Here, P(A|Bi) represents the conditional probability of event A occurring given that event Bi has occurred, and P(Bi) is the probability of event Bi occurring. This formula is particularly useful when the direct calculation of P(A) is difficult, but the conditional probabilities P(A|Bi) and the probabilities of the partition events P(Bi) are known or can be easily determined.

The law of total probability is a cornerstone for many probabilistic calculations and reasoning processes.
