Kokeensa

Kokeensa is a Finnish term that functions as a possessive noun phrase meaning "his/her/its exam" or "one's own test." It is formed from the noun koke, meaning "test" or "exam," combined with the third-person possessive suffix -nsä. The result is spelled kokeensa, with a double e, in standard Finnish.

Usage and meaning

In ordinary Finnish, possessive suffixes attach to the noun to indicate ownership by the subject. Kokeensa therefore refers to the exam belonging to someone, and it appears in clauses where the exam is being talked about. Examples include sentences such as: "Hän palautti kokeensa opettajalle." (He/She returned his/her exam to the teacher.) and "Kokeensa tulokset olivat paremmat kuin odotettu." (The results of his/her exam were better than expected.)

Notes

Because kokeensa is a bound form, it is generally not used as a standalone lexical item outside of a sentence. Its exact reference—whether the exam that someone took or simply the exam belonging to someone—depends on context and surrounding words.
