Kohärenzeigenschaften, often translated as coherence properties, refer to the characteristics of waves that describe their predictability and phase relationships. These properties are crucial in understanding phenomena like interference and diffraction, particularly in fields such as optics, quantum mechanics, and acoustics. Two main types of coherence are distinguished: temporal coherence and spatial coherence.

Temporal coherence describes how well the phase of a wave is preserved over time. A wave with high temporal coherence will maintain a consistent phase relationship with itself for extended periods. This is often quantified by the coherence length or coherence time. Sources with narrow spectral linewidths, like lasers, exhibit high temporal coherence.

Spatial coherence, on the other hand, relates to the phase correlation between different points across the wavefront of a wave at a given instant. High spatial coherence means that the phases at various points on the wavefront are predictable relative to each other. Lasers also tend to have high spatial coherence, enabling them to form sharp interference patterns over large distances.

The presence and degree of these coherence properties determine the visibility and extent of interference patterns. For instance, significant interference effects are only observed when the interfering waves possess sufficient temporal and spatial coherence relative to the path difference or the spatial separation of the points being considered.
