Koháry

Koháry was a Hungarian noble family whose history dates back to the 14th century. The family originated from Sáróc, a village in the Kingdom of Hungary. The name "Koháry" is derived from the surname of a noble, Johann Comes, also known as Johann Koháry, who is mentioned in historical records from the 14th century.

Throughout their history, the Koháry family played significant roles in Hungarian politics and society. Many members held high-ranking positions, such as high-ranking officials in the Hungarian court, nobles, and even bishops. The family also produced several notable figures, including Palatine Ferenc Koháry and Janos Koháry, a prominent official under King Sigismund II.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Koháry family gained immense power and influence in Hungary. They were granted many concessions, including control of the Augsburg Basin, and were instrumental in promoting the interests of the Hungarian nobility. One notable member, József Koháry II, even advanced to the rank of Imperial Count, a title granted by the Habsburg Emperor as part of the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece.

The Koháry family was intermarried with other noble Hungarian families, solidifying their influence and position within Hungarian society. By the mid-19th century, the Koháry family had declined somewhat in influence, but they continued to hold significant positions in Hungarian politics and society.
