The term is formed from linguistic elements resembling Estonian roots, with kohde meaning target or object and maa meaning land; scholars use it descriptively to denote a homeland imagined or pursued, rather than an officially defined nation.

In migration policy discourse, kohdemaasta functions as a thought experiment about repatriation, homeland reconstruction, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a transnational context. In speculative fiction, authors deploy it as a setting or symbol to explore memory, identity, language preservation, and cultural continuity across distances and generations.
