The name "Kogelus" is derived from the Greek word "kogelos," meaning "lump" or "ball," referring to the distinctive shape of the sporocarps.

The fruiting bodies of Kogelus species are generally spherical to irregular in form and can range in size from small to moderately large. They possess a thick, tough peridium, or outer wall, which encloses a gleba. The gleba, the spore-bearing tissue, is initially firm and fleshy but often dries and breaks down with age, releasing the spores. The color of Kogelus species can vary, often appearing brown, ochre, or grayish on the exterior, while the interior gleba might be darker, sometimes with purplish or blackish hues when mature.

These fungi are saprobic, meaning they derive nutrients from dead organic matter in the soil.
