Koagulationsbades, in English coagulation baths, are liquid media used to induce coagulation or phase separation of a polymer solution during manufacturing. They provide a nonsolvent or a chemical environment that causes dissolved polymers to precipitate, gel, or regenerate into a solid structure. Coagulation baths are central to processes that transform a homogeneous dope or solution into a solid, porous, or fibrous material.

Applications and contexts

Coagulation baths are widely used in wet-spinning of fibers, such as viscose, cellulose derivatives, and certain synthetic polymers, where the extruded polymer solution enters the bath and coagulates to form filaments. They are also employed in membrane fabrication via non-solvent induced phase separation, where immersion in a bath containing a nonsolvent leads to the formation of porous polymer membranes. In some cases, baths may include acids, salts, or other additives to control coagulation rate, regeneration, crystallization, or pore structure. The specific bath composition and temperature depend on the polymer system and the desired properties of the final product.

Mechanism and process characteristics

The bath facilitates mass transfer between the polymer solution and the surrounding liquid, typically by exchanging solvent with a nonsolvent or by triggering a chemical regeneration reaction. Residence time, bath temperature, and bath composition determine the rate of coagulation, the morphology of the solidified material, and its mechanical and transport properties. After coagulation, products may undergo washing, neutralization, drying, or further treatment.

Safety and environmental considerations
