Klippunten

Klippunten is a coastal natural area situated on the western fringe of the country, extending along a stretch of rocky shoreline. The name Klippunten derives from the local language and translates roughly as "cliff points," reflecting the prominent sea-cliff features that characterize the site.

Geography and geology: The coastline comprises a sequence of limestone and sandstone cliffs interspersed with ledges, tidal pools, and sea stacks. Cliffs rise up to around 30–40 meters in places, creating microhabitats for coastal plants and invertebrates. The area includes nearby dune fields and sheltered coves that contribute to its overall biodiversity.

Ecology: The site supports coastal cliff habitats that host seabirds and migratory shorebirds, as well as a diverse plant community adapted to salty spray and wind exposure. Seasonal tides create habitats for invertebrates and fish in rock pools; adjacent dune systems shelter small mammals and ground-nesting species.

Conservation and management: Klippunten is designated as a protected area under national law and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. It is managed by the national park or nature conservation authority, with maintained public paths, signage, and seasonal access restrictions to protect nesting birds and sensitive habitats.

History and use: The area has a long association with coastal use, including traditional fishing and limited quarrying in some subareas. Today, the site is popular for hiking and birdwatching, with guidelines to minimize disturbance and preserve its natural values.
