Kliimameteoroloogia is the interdisciplinary field that studies the long‑term behavior of climatic systems and their interaction with atmospheric processes. It expands on traditional meteorology by incorporating climatic trends, variability, and change into the analysis of weather patterns. The discipline uses concepts from physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science to understand how atmospheric composition, ocean currents, land‑surface processes, and human activities shape climate on decadal to centennial scales.

Key research areas include the quantification of climate variability such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, the Madden‑Julian Oscillation, and the Arctic amplification phenomenon. Scientists in this field develop and validate global climate models, which simulate the response of the atmosphere and oceans to changes in greenhouse gas concentrations, aerosols, and land‑use practices. These models provide projections of temperature, precipitation, and extreme‑weather frequency that inform policy and adaptation strategies.
