The term klausulis (pronounced klow-shoo-lees) derives from the Latvian word klausīties, meaning "to listen" or "to heed," reflecting the genre’s focus on introspective storytelling and moral reflection. These songs typically explore themes of love, loss, nature, and the human condition, often framed within a rural or historical context.

Klausulis songs are usually performed a cappella, with a simple yet expressive vocal style that emphasizes phrasing and emotional nuance.
