In linguistics, it refers to the regular and dominant morpho-syntactic pattern through which a language forms its most common word forms, such as inflectional endings or derivational processes, from which related forms derive. The concept is also used more generally in education, psychology and cognitive science to denote the principal sequence, rule, or strategy that underpins a behavior or a task.
