Kivitoo

Kivitoo is a former Inuit settlement located on the east coast of Baffin Island in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. Situated on a bay of the same name, Kivitoo was historically a significant location for Inuit hunters and their families. The community faced challenges in the mid-20th century due to government relocation policies and the decline of traditional hunting grounds.

By the 1960s, the population had dwindled, and the settlement was eventually abandoned. Residents were relocated to larger, more established communities such as Pangnirtung. While no longer inhabited, Kivitoo remains a place of historical and cultural importance for the Inuit of the region. Archaeological evidence and oral traditions continue to shed light on the lives of those who once called Kivitoo home. The name "Kivitoo" itself is an Inuktitut word, and its meaning is often associated with the natural environment of the area. The site serves as a reminder of the resilience and adaptability of the Inuit people in the face of historical changes.
