Kivimeteoriitit

Kivimeteoriitit are a type of stony meteorite, characterized by their composition primarily of silicate minerals. They are differentiated into subtypes based on their mineralogy, with the most common being chondrites, achondrites, and ordinary chondrites.

Chondrites, typically around 90% of all stony meteorites, contain primitive dust particles known as chondrules. These particles are rich in water, sulfur, and organic compounds, providing important insights into the formation and evolution of the solar system. Ordinary chondrites, on the other hand, are abundant and composed mainly of the silicate minerals pyroxene, plagioclase, and olivine.

Achondrites are notable for being rare and the least abundant among stony meteorites. Their mineral composition often features high-temperature silicate minerals such as diopside and orthopyroxene, suggesting that these meteorites experienced extensive melting and differentiation. Another subtype, the howardites, are thought to be fragments of the lunar or planetary crust, composed primarily of eucrite debris with smaller amounts of stony meteorite and brecciated terrestrial rocks.

Origin theories suggest that stony meteorites formed from the debris of planetary differentiation in the nascent solar system, while others originate from natural satellite bodies, such as asteroid fragments ejected into space.
