Kiteytysmenetelmä refers to a method of purification or separation based on the formation of crystals from a solution or melt. This process leverages the principle that as a substance crystallizes, impurities tend to remain in the surrounding liquid or gas phase, leaving behind a purer solid form.

The fundamental steps involve dissolving the impure substance in a suitable solvent or melting it. The conditions, such as temperature and concentration, are then adjusted to induce crystallization. This might involve cooling the solution, evaporating the solvent, or adding an anti-solvent to reduce the solubility of the desired compound. As crystals form, they grow by accumulating molecules from the solution in an ordered lattice structure.

Once crystallization is complete, the solid crystals are separated from the liquid (mother liquor) through methods like filtration or centrifugation. The collected crystals can then be washed with a pure solvent to remove any residual mother liquor adhering to their surface. For further purification, the process can be repeated, often referred to as recrystallization.
