Kirjutiseks

Kirjutiseks is an Estonian term used in linguistic descriptions to denote a verbal form that marks purpose related to writing. In such analyses, it is described as a non-finite form derived from the verb kirjutama (to write) that functions to express “for writing” or “in order to write.” The form is not commonly used in contemporary standard Estonian, and it appears mainly in older grammar descriptions or in discussions of historical or dialectal variants.

Etymology and morphology: The proposed form is built from the verb root kirjut- (write) with a suffix that is understood in some grammars to convey purpose or function. This contrasts with the more common modern construction for purpose, which is kirjutamiseks, formed with the -miseks suffix. The exact status and productivity of kirjitsiseks vary by source, and some grammars treat it as archaic, dialectal, or merely theoretical.

Usage and status: In current everyday Estonian, writers typically use the periphrastic or infinitival constructions such as kirjutamiseks or other periphrasis to indicate purpose. Kirjutiseks is therefore rarely encountered outside linguistic discussions, dictionaries, or historical texts. When it does appear, it is generally cited as an old or regional variant rather than a standard form.
