Kilpnäärmete, often referred to as the thyroid gland, is an endocrine gland located in the neck, below the larynx. It is shaped like a butterfly and consists of two lobes connected by a narrow band of tissue called the isthmus. The primary function of the thyroid gland is to produce and secrete thyroid hormones, namely thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones play a crucial role in regulating the body's metabolism, which is the process by which the body converts food into energy.

Thyroid hormones influence a wide range of bodily functions, including heart rate, body temperature, growth and development, and the functioning of many other organs. The production of thyroid hormones is regulated by the pituitary gland, which is located in the brain. The pituitary gland secretes thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which signals the thyroid gland to produce more or less thyroid hormone as needed.

Disorders of the thyroid gland can lead to various health problems. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, leading to a slowdown in metabolism. Symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, and feeling cold. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, causing metabolism to speed up. This can result in symptoms like weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and anxiety. Other common thyroid conditions include goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, and thyroid nodules, which are lumps that can form within the gland. Diagnosis of thyroid conditions typically involves blood tests to measure hormone levels and imaging techniques such as ultrasound. Treatment options vary depending on the specific condition and may include medication, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery.
