Kilonovatähteä

Kilonova tähteä, sometimes spelled kilonovatähteä, is a celestial event that occurs when two neutron stars collide. These cataclysmic collisions are incredibly energetic and are responsible for the creation of many of the universe's heavy elements, such as gold and platinum. The process is thought to involve a rapid neutron capture process, often referred to as the r-process, where atomic nuclei rapidly absorb neutrons.

The light emitted by a kilonova is a brief but intense burst, typically lasting for a few days to a couple of weeks. This electromagnetic radiation spans across various wavelengths, including visible light, infrared, and even gamma rays. The detection of gravitational waves from merging neutron stars, like the event GW170817, has provided strong evidence for kilonovae and their role in nucleosynthesis.
