Kilikaya

Kilikaya, also transliterated as Kilikya in Turkish, is the historic and geographical term for Cilicia, a region along the southeastern Mediterranean coast of Asia Minor. The name appears in classical and medieval sources and is commonly used in historical contexts to refer to this area. In Turkish usage, Kilikya denotes the broader region associated with Cilicia.

Geographically, Kilikaya is bounded by the Taurus Mountains to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Its core area aligns with parts of today’s southern Turkey, including portions of Adana and Mersin provinces and extending into regions such as Hatay and Osmaniye. The Cilician Gates, a prominent mountain pass through the Taurus range, have served as a crucial corridor connecting the coastal zone with the Anatolian interior.

Historically, Cilicia/Kilikaya has been a crossroads of civilizations. In antiquity it was influenced by Hittite, Persian, Greek, and later Roman cultures, developing as a strategic maritime and land corridor. In the Middle Ages, the region was associated with the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, a Crusader-era successor state, before later incorporation into successive empires, culminating in Ottoman rule. The area was notable for its coastal towns and inland trade routes linking the eastern Mediterranean with Anatolia.

Modern usage of the term is predominantly historical. In contemporary Turkish geography, the area is described through its provinces rather than as a single administrative unit, though the name Kilikya persists in historical writing, archaeology, and discourse related to the Cilician Gates and ancient Cilicia.
