Kildeskriftsystem refers to the set of ancient writing systems used by the Norse and other Germanic peoples during the early medieval period. The term is derived from the Old Norse "kildi," meaning "source" or "origin," and "skriftsystem," meaning "writing system." It encompasses the runic alphabets, collectively known as runes, which were employed from roughly the 2nd century to the 12th century CE.

Runes are characterized by their angular and straight-line design, making them suitable for carving into stone, wood, and metal. The earliest runic inscriptions are found in Scandinavia and are classified primarily into three main Runic alphabets: the Elder Futhark, the Younger Futhark, and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc. The Elder Futhark, used from the 2nd to 8th centuries, consists of 24 characters and is the oldest form of runic writing. The Younger Futhark, a later development with fewer characters, was used during the Viking Age, while the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc expanded the script to accommodate the Old English language.

Runes served various purposes, including memorial inscriptions, magical rituals, religious texts, and everyday writing. Despite their decline with the Christianization of Scandinavia, they remain an important part of Norse cultural heritage and have influenced modern representations of Norse mythology and iconography.
