Kiiritis

Kiiritis is a medical term referring to inflammation of the iris, the colored part of the eye that controls the pupil's size. It is a type of uveitis, which is inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. Kiiritis can affect one or both eyes and can range from mild to severe.

Symptoms of kiiritis often include eye pain, redness, light sensitivity (photophobia), blurred vision, and small or irregular pupil appearance. The onset can be sudden, and the condition can recur. The exact cause of kiiritis is not always identified, but it is often associated with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or sarcoidosis. Infections, such as toxoplasmosis or herpes simplex virus, can also trigger inflammation. In some cases, eye injury can lead to kiiritis.

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist, including a slit-lamp examination to visualize the iris and anterior chamber. Sometimes blood tests or imaging may be performed to investigate underlying systemic causes.

Treatment for kiiritis aims to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and prevent complications like glaucoma or cataracts. This often involves topical corticosteroid eye drops. In more severe cases, oral corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications may be prescribed. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preserve vision.
