Kiinteäainemääritys, known in English as solids determination or gravimetric solids analysis, is a fundamental analytical technique used to quantify the amount of solid material present in a sample. This method is widely applied across various industries, including environmental monitoring, food science, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. The principle behind kiinteäainemääritys is straightforward: it involves measuring the mass of residue remaining after a sample has been dried under controlled conditions.

The process typically begins with accurately weighing a known volume or mass of the sample. This sample is then subjected to a drying procedure, usually in an oven at a specific temperature and for a defined period, to evaporate all volatile components, primarily water. Once the drying is complete, the sample is cooled in a desiccator to prevent reabsorption of atmospheric moisture and then reweighed.
