Kiertoletkut

Kiertoletkut are a type of steam locomotive commonly used in Finland. The name, translating to "return locomotive" in English, refers to the cyclical smoke deflectors fitted on the front of the engine, which combine the exhaust steam with the return current of cold air in order to cool the exhaust gases to a lower temperature before releasing them to the atmospheric, thus reducing smoke emission. This design was primarily employed to adhere to strict smoke emissions regulations in Finland during the early 20th century.

The primary advantages of kiertoletkut locomotives include their ability to reduce smoke emissions and operate within the environmental constraints of the time. These locomotives feature a distinctive smoke deflector, also known as a fan or assorted intake and helical ecosystem designs, which circulates the air around the chimney, leading to more efficient steam consumption by the engine and lowering emissions.

Kiertoletkut locomotives have a similar construction and layout as regular steam locomotives, with power sourced from a steam-powered engine.
