Kierrepyörregalakseissa, also known as ring galaxies, are a class of galaxies characterized by their distinctive, nearly circular shape. Unlike spiral galaxies, which have a central bulge and spiral arms, ring galaxies have a bright ring of stars surrounding a dim, featureless core. This unique structure is thought to be the result of a past galactic collision or interaction.

The central core of a ring galaxy is often devoid of stars and gas, which is a stark contrast to the bright ring that encircles it. This galaxy is approximately 300 million light-years away from Earth and has a diameter of about 150,000 light-years. Despite its dim appearance, NGC 6872 is an active galaxy, with a supermassive black hole at its core that is accreting matter from the surrounding ring.

Ring galaxies are relatively rare, with only a few hundred known examples in the observable universe. They are of particular interest to astronomers because they provide insights into the dynamics of galactic interactions and the evolution of galaxies over time.
