Khizr, also known as Khidr or Khidir, is a revered figure in Islamic tradition, often identified with the biblical figure of Elijah. He is described as a righteous servant of God, possessing divine knowledge and longevity. While his exact identity and lineage are debated, Khizr is consistently portrayed as a wise guide and mentor.

According to Islamic texts and folklore, Khizr is a prophet or a saint who has attained an extraordinarily long life, sometimes believed to be immortal. He is said to wander the earth, offering guidance and assistance to those who are lost or in need of wisdom. His appearances are often subtle, and he is known for his ability to impart spiritual insights.

The story of Khizr is most famously recounted in the Quran, in Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18). In this narrative, Moses, accompanied by a young companion, encounters a servant of God (widely interpreted as Khizr) who possesses knowledge that Moses does not. Khizr performs a series of actions that appear inexplicable and even wrong to Moses, such as damaging a ship, killing a boy, and repairing a falling wall. However, Khizr explains the divine wisdom behind each action, revealing that they were necessary to avert future calamities or to fulfill God's plan. This encounter highlights the limitations of human understanding and the importance of trusting in God's ultimate knowledge and justice.

Khizr is a beloved figure in various Sufi traditions, where he is seen as a spiritual guide and a source of esoteric knowledge. Many mystics aspire to meet him and benefit from his teachings. His veneration extends beyond Islam, with similar figures appearing in Jewish and Christian traditions, suggesting a shared archetype of a divinely inspired elder or prophet.
