Khasab

Khasab is the capital city of the Musandam Governorate in Oman. It lies on the northern coast of the Musandam Peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Hormuz. The city sits amid a rugged coastline punctuated by fjord-like inlets called khors, and is a base for exploring the Musandam's marine scenery.

Historically, Khasab dates to early settlements and developed under various rulers. The Khasab Fort, a fortress from the Portuguese era, stands as a notable historic landmark; it now functions as a museum and cultural site within the old town of white-washed houses.

Economic activity in Khasab centers on fishing, small-scale trade, and increasingly tourism. Tourists often take dhow cruises through the khors, go snorkeling or diving in clear waters, and visit nearby villages. The surrounding Musandam region is known for boat-building and traditional crafts.

Transport and climate: Khasab is served by Khasab Airport, with regional flights connecting to Muscat and other destinations. The town is a gateway for visitors to the Musandam's fjords, accessible by sea or road routes that pass through the United Arab Emirates.

The area has a hot desert climate, with very hot summers, mild winters, and little rainfall.

Governance: As the administrative center of Musandam Governorate, Khasab hosts government offices and services for the province. The official language is Arabic; the currency is the Omani rial.
