Keuhkopuuns

Keuhkopuuns, scientifically known as lungwort, is a genus of perennial, herbaceous plants in the family Boraginaceae. The genus is native to Europe and Asia, with most species found in temperate woodland habitats. The name "lungwort" is derived from the plant's leaf shape, which resembles the lobes of a lung, and its historical use in treating respiratory ailments.

The most common species is Pulmonaria officinalis, also known as common lungwort. This species typically grows to a height of 10-30 cm and features ovate to lanceolate leaves, often marked with distinctive white or silver spots. The plant produces clusters of bell-shaped flowers in spring, which can vary in color from pink and red to blue and purple, often changing color as they mature. Lungwort is a popular ground cover in shady garden areas due to its attractive foliage and early spring blooms.

Other species within the genus include Pulmonaria rubra, known for its red flowers, and Pulmonaria longifolia, characterized by its longer, narrower leaves. Keuhkopuuns are generally low-maintenance plants, preferring moist, well-drained soil and partial to full shade. They are hardy and can tolerate a range of temperatures. While primarily known for ornamental value, some traditional medicinal uses have been attributed to various keuhkopuuns species, though scientific evidence for these claims varies. The plants are also valuable for early pollinators in the spring garden.
