Ketontestekké

Ketontestekké is a Hungarian term that translates to "ketone bodies" in English. Ketone bodies are molecules produced by the liver during periods of low carbohydrate intake or when the body is unable to use glucose for energy, such as in uncontrolled diabetes. The primary ketone bodies are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone.

Normally, the body uses glucose as its main source of energy. However, when glucose is scarce, the liver breaks down fatty acids into ketone bodies. These ketone bodies can then be used by various tissues, including the brain, as an alternative fuel source. This metabolic state is known as ketosis.

Ketosis can occur during prolonged fasting, very low-carbohydrate diets (like the ketogenic diet), or intense exercise. In these situations, elevated levels of ketone bodies in the blood are a normal physiological adaptation.

However, very high levels of ketone bodies, particularly in the context of diabetes, can lead to a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA occurs when the body produces too many ketones too quickly, leading to an acidic state in the blood. Symptoms of DKA can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, and confusion.

Monitoring ketone levels can be done through urine or blood tests. These tests are often used by individuals following ketogenic diets to track their state of ketosis or by individuals with diabetes to check for signs of DKA.
