Ketobearing

Ketobearing is a term used in chemical literature to describe a molecule that contains at least one ketone functional group, typically represented as RCOR'. The word combines 'ketone' with 'bearing' to denote the presence of a carbonyl-containing moiety. It is not a standard IUPAC term; more common phrasing is 'a ketone-containing compound' or 'a ketone-bearing substrate.'

In practice, ketobearing compounds include simple ketones such as acetone (propan-2-one) and cyclohexanone, as well as more complex structures like acetophenone or benzophenone. The ketone group imparts polarity, enables enolization, and undergoes a range of transformations including nucleophilic addition, reduction, oxidation, and condensation reactions.

In polymer science and materials chemistry, 'ketone-bearing' motifs appear in monomers such as vinyl ketones or in ketone-functionalized polymers, where the carbonyl unit enables crosslinking, post-polymerization modification, or reversible reactions (for example, oxime or hydrazone formation).
