Keskuslämmitys, meaning central heating in Finnish, refers to a system where heat is generated in a central location and then distributed to multiple spaces. This is a common and efficient method for heating buildings, particularly in colder climates. The heat source can vary, commonly including boilers that burn fossil fuels like natural gas or oil, or increasingly, renewable energy sources such as biomass, heat pumps, or solar thermal systems.

The generated heat is typically transferred via a medium, most commonly hot water or steam, through a network of pipes. This heated medium circulates from the central plant to radiators, underfloor heating systems, or air handlers located within the individual rooms or units of a building. Once the heat is released into the space, the cooled medium returns to the central plant to be reheated, completing the cycle.

In apartment buildings or larger complexes, a shared central heating system can offer significant economic and environmental advantages. It allows for centralized maintenance and control, and often utilizes more efficient large-scale heating technologies compared to individual heating systems in each dwelling.
