Keskkond

Keskkond is the Estonian term for environment or surroundings. It denotes the total set of natural, built, social, and cultural conditions in which living beings and human communities exist. The concept is used across science, urban planning, education, and public policy to describe how these conditions influence development, health, and well-being.

Components of keskkond include natural, built, social–cultural, and economic dimensions. The natural environment covers ecosystems, biodiversity, air and water quality, soils, and climate. The built environment comprises housing, infrastructure, public spaces, and urban form. The social and cultural environment includes institutions, norms, education, language, and community networks. In contemporary usage, the digital or online environment is increasingly treated as an integral part of the total keskkond.

Interactions between humans and their keskkond drive sustainability discussions. Human activity can alter ecosystems, climate, and resource availability, while changes in the environment affect health, livelihoods, and resilience. Sustainable development seeks to preserve ecosystem services and protect vulnerable communities for present and future generations.
