Kerait

Kerait was a prominent medieval Khitanized Mongolic nomadic tribal confederation that emerged in the Central Asian steppes during the 11th century. Originating from the region around the modern-day Mongolia and Xinjiang, the Kerait played a significant role in the political and military affairs of Central Asia during the 11th and 12th centuries.

Initially a vassal of the Khitan Liao Dynasty, the Kerait gained independence and expanded their influence under their leadership, especially during the rise of the Seljuk Empire. The confederation was known for its strong martial tradition and served as both a military power and a political entity that often allied with, or opposed, neighboring states.

The Kerait are perhaps best known for their association with the eminent Mongol leader Genghis Khan (born Temüjin). Genghis Khan sought the support of the Kerait during his rise to power, and his clan's alliance with the Kerait was a key factor in his early military successes. However, conflicts eventually erupted between Genghis Khan and the Kerait, leading to their downfall in the early 13th century following the Mongol expansions.

The Kerait society was organized around clan ties and pastoral nomadism, with a hierarchical leadership structure based on aristocratic clans. They played a crucial role in bridging the cultures of the Inner Asian nomadic worlds and fostering interactions between various Turkic, Mongolic, and Chinese civilizations.

Today, the Kerait are recognized as an important part of the history of Mongolia and Central Asia, illustrating the complex social and political dynamics of medieval nomadic societies in the region.
