Kenttälaitekerros, often translated as "field device layer" or "edge layer," refers to the foundational part of an industrial automation or Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) architecture. This layer comprises the physical devices that directly interact with the real world. Examples include sensors, actuators, motors, pumps, valves, and other machinery. These devices are responsible for measuring physical parameters, such as temperature, pressure, flow, or position, and for executing commands that affect the physical process.

The primary function of the kenttälaitekerros is data acquisition and actuation. Sensors collect raw data from the environment, which is then often processed by embedded intelligence within the device itself or passed up to higher layers for analysis. Actuators receive commands from control systems and translate them into physical actions. Communication at this layer is typically characterized by specialized industrial protocols designed for reliability and real-time performance, such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, or Modbus.

Security is a critical consideration for the kenttälaitekerros, as these devices are often the most vulnerable entry points into an industrial network. Compromise at this level can lead to operational disruptions, safety hazards, or data breaches. The trend towards IIoT is increasing the complexity and connectivity of this layer, with more devices becoming "smart" and capable of local processing and communication, blurring the lines between traditional field devices and the layers above.
