Kenizzite is a term used in the Hebrew Bible to denote a member of the Kenizzites, an ancient clan associated with the land of Canaan. The Kenizzites are mentioned sparsely in biblical narratives, and their precise origin and status remain a matter of interpretation. The most prominent bearer of the name is Caleb, described as “the Kenizzite,” a designation that scholars understand as indicating Caleb’s ancestral lineage rather than his tribal affiliation alone.

Origins and identity are debated. Some scholars link the Kenizzites to Kenaz, a name appearing in genealogies connected to Esau’s line, which would place the Kenizzites in the broader Edomite or southern Near Eastern milieu. Others view the Kenizzites as a Canaanite group that was present in the southern part of the land during the Israelite settlement. The biblical text does not provide a detailed ethnographic profile, and the Kenizzites are generally referenced as a distinct people or clan rather than as a fully described nation.

Biblical references to the Kenizzites are primarily notable because they identify Caleb as a Kenizzite, highlighting a perceived non-Israelite origin within an Israelite leadership figure.
