Kelloepäisyys

Kelloepäisyys, also known as chronosynclastic infundibulum, is a hypothetical astrophysical phenomenon. The concept was first introduced by science fiction author Kurt Vonnegut in his novel "The Sirens of Titan." In the novel, a chronosynclastic infundibulum is described as a place where all the different kinds of truths and lies can exist simultaneously. It is a point in space-time where the usual rules of physics and logic do not apply.

Vonnegut uses the term to explain the seemingly paradoxical nature of reality and the subjective experience of time. Individuals who enter a kelloepäisyys are said to perceive all possible points of view at once, making it impossible to discern a single, objective truth. This creates a state of profound confusion and disorientation. The character Malachi Constant experiences this phenomenon and it fundamentally alters his understanding of existence.

While the term kelloepäisyys originates in fiction, it has been adopted by some as a metaphorical descriptor for situations where conflicting perspectives or information coexist without resolution. It can be used to describe complex social or philosophical dilemmas where multiple, seemingly irreconcilable truths are presented. The concept highlights the limitations of singular perspectives and the potential for a more encompassing, albeit disorienting, understanding of reality. It remains a purely theoretical and literary construct, with no basis in current scientific observation or theory.
