Keittolevystä

Keittolevystä, or cooking plate, is a common term in Finnish for a heating element found on many stovetops. It is a flat, circular disc, typically made of cast iron or a similar durable metal, that sits flush with the stovetop surface. When electricity is supplied, a heating coil embedded within the plate glows red, transferring heat to the cookware placed upon it. Keittolevystä are known for their durability and ability to retain heat, making them suitable for a variety of cooking tasks. They can be found on both electric and sometimes even gas stovetops, though their primary association is with electric models.

The operation of a keittolevystä is straightforward. A knob or dial on the stovetop controls the power supplied to the heating element, thereby regulating the temperature. Lower settings provide gentle warmth, ideal for simmering, while higher settings generate intense heat for searing or boiling. The thermal mass of the cast iron plate means it takes some time to heat up and cool down, a characteristic that experienced cooks learn to utilize for precise temperature control. Over time, keittolevystä can develop a patina from repeated use and seasoning, which can further enhance their cooking properties and protect them from rust.
