Kausalkedjan, often translated as "causal chain," refers to a sequence of events where each event is the direct or indirect cause of the next event in the series. This concept is fundamental in understanding cause-and-effect relationships across various disciplines, including philosophy, science, law, and everyday reasoning.

In its simplest form, a causal chain consists of a cause, followed by an effect, which in turn becomes the cause of a subsequent effect, and so on. For example, a dropped glass (cause) breaks (effect), and the shards of glass (cause) can then cause injury if stepped on (effect). This illustrates a linear progression of causality.

However, causal chains can be more complex, involving multiple causes contributing to a single effect, or a single cause leading to multiple effects. They can also be cyclical, where an effect eventually influences its original cause.
